The theory of the fifth empire draws from Dan. 7:17–27 wherein the dream of Daniel is interpreted to prophesise four kingdoms which were viewed by ecclesiastics as being the Assyrian, Persian, Greek, and Roman Empire, renewed in the Frankish Kingdom by the Translatio Imperii ad Francos. The fifth empire was predicted to be a great Christian Empire, divinely sanctioned and eternal. The Apocalypse of St John was another prophecy that foretold the decimation of the Babylonian Empire, a kingdom seen to correspond with the Mameluke Sultanate
