The early work on the MNE as an actor was developed in Stephen Hymer's 1960 Doctoral dissertation, written under Charles Kindleberger. See Hymer, The International Operations of National Firms: A Study of Direct Investment (Ph.D. Thesis, MIT; published by MIT Press under the same title in 1976). Their works on oligopolistic motives for FDI are now known in IBS as the Hymer-Kindleberger approach.
