Interestingly, it lists as peripheral Muslim societies those the Indian Subcontinent, South-East Asia, Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and Sicily, but not those the Balkans. The explanation could hardly be that the Balkans belonged to the Ottoman Empire, for so did some North African Muslim societies, yet they are still treated as peripheral both under the Ottomans and later.
