Interestingly, it lists as 'peripheral' Muslim societies those in the Indian Subcontinent, South-East Asia, Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and Sicily, but not those in the Balkans. The explanation could hardly be that the Balkans belonged to the Ottoman Empire, for so did some North African Muslim societies, yet they are still treated as 'peripheral' both under the Ottomans and later. Even in the 1970s, the Balkans were an Islamic terra incognita. The war in Bosnia led to the 'discovery' of Balkan Islam, by both Europeans and the Muslim world. See, for instance No. 4
