    • This figure is based upon an estimate supplied by Hong and Ning (2004). Since they question the validity of the officially reported vacancy rates in China, they base their calculations on the cumulative difference between the floorspace completed and sold since 1995 divided by the cumulative floorspace completed. This differs from the official figures, which are calculated as the number of unsold housing units held by property developers divided by the total amount of floorspace constructed over the previous three-year period. The number of unsold housing units includes all newly built property without making allowances for marketing periods
