Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that both high BMI and EGWG were associated with weight retention of greater than 20 pounds and that these risks were mitigated by postpartum breastfeeding and exercise. This study highlights the prevalence of EGWG and PPWR and points to potentially modifiable risk factors that could be targeted to address the problem.

In this meta-analysis of 6 retrospective cohort studies published through 2013, the authors found that obese women with gestational weight loss (GWL) had a higher odds of delivering a small for gestational age (SGA) infant and a lower odds of delivering a large for gestational age (LGA) infant. The authors conclude that despite decreased odds of LGA, the increased odds of SGA and lack of data on the effects of GWL on preterm birth indicate that GWL should not be recommended for obese women at this time.
