    • To detect the H2 and O2 gases evolved, an electrochemical cell was connected to a glass-closed gas circulation system equipped with an on-line gas chromatograph, which is the same as that previously used for photocatalytic reactions (ref 23). Prior to photoelectrolysis, the reaction system was degassed completely to remove residual air, followed by the introduction of Ar gas. The measurements were conducted in a two-electrode configuration consisting of a working electrode (R-TiO2) and a Pt wire cathode (1 mm diameter, 8.5 mm length) in the presence of an applied bias (≤1.0 V) under simulated sunlight using a solar simulator (Asahi Spectra, HAL-320).
