Measurements relying on the Rayleigh scattering, such as dark field microscopy are limited to nanoparticle detection of particles ∼10-20 nm in radius. Smaller nanoparticles, down to 2.5 nm can be in directly detected by photothermal imaging where a laser pulse induces a temperature rise local to the nanoparticle. See ref. 17
