In a conference of practitioners and writers on dialogue in late 1994, several made this point, which led me to think that the underlying theoretical ground was not yet articulated so that at least the boundaries of the different views could be seen clearly. The following positions seemed to be represented in this event: dialogue is a community building activity; dialogue is a ground for conversing about inequities the dominant culture imposes on individuals; dialogue is opportunity for free floating exchange of meaning; dialogue pierces collective illusion; dialogue activates the self-organizing energy of any system or group; dialogue is an inquiry into thought; dialogue is an opportunity for deepening intimacy
