It has not been possible to convince rank-and-file priests and parishioners of the need for an autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church. For example, after Archbishop Lazar' (Shvets) of Odesa declared his support for the UOC-KP in 1992 diocesan clerics and seminarians from the Odesa Theological Seminary drove him out of his residence and refused to allow him back in.
