    • New York: Routledge, While the ultra-leftist thesis about the essential identity of social democracy and Leninism is obviously both theoretically and politically inadequate, the assertion that there are fundamental continuities between these socialist strands is defensible. For instance, Carl Boggs traces the emergence since the 1920s of the statist myth of socialism, embodied social democracy and Leninism. Despite the disparities between these two strands, as Boggs points out, they have common at least the following features: a statist politics, a commitment to economic rationalisation, and a hegemonic place for technocratic intellectuals
