20. The prevalence of DPM was scored as 0, 50, or 100% based on the number of pectoralis minor muscles (0, 1, or 2) affected by a lesion in each bird.
21. The percentage of the ventral surfaces of the pectoralis minor muscles of each bird that were involved by lesions (as evidenced by discoloration) was scored from 0 to 100%.
22. The discoloration of affected muscles was scored from 0 to 6. A score of 0 was assigned to normal muscles. Slightly abnormal muscles generally were pinkish or tan colored and often had slight internal hemorrhaging visible through the fascia. These received a score of 2. Muscles that were predominantly red to purple in color, often with an accumulation of blood underneath and outside the fascia, received a score of 4. A score of 6 was assigned to muscles that were primarily green in color. These often had purplish blood underneath and outside of the fascia. Scores of 1, 3, and 5 were assigned intermediate to those previously defined.
