    • Vincennes: Service Historique de l'Armée de l'Air, (The article began as a paper under the same title, delivered to the Franco-British historians' colloquium on ‘Relations between France and Great Britain from 1935 to 1940', fifth meeting: ‘La rupture franco-britannique, mai–juillet 1940', London, 14–16 Dec. 1983.) ‘It is said', wrote Christienne, that Air Chief Marshal Barratt [commander of Britain's Advanced Air Striking Force in France in 1940], an outspoken defender of French standpoints moreover, observed one day ‘that the R.A.F. could not win the war if the French infantry had lost it'. I have not been able to prove the veracity of the remark but I find myself compelled to admit its force … Today, with the passage of time, problems take on a different light and one cannot but offer thanks that Fighter Command managed to convince the politicians not to make it a useless sacrifice in a hopeless cause (ibid., pp.328, 330
