A particularly useful collection of essays examining the colonial influence on Buddhism as a scholarly subject of inquiry in the West. The pioneer contributions of Jung, Suzuki, Tucci, and others are considered and subjected to critical analysis.

This pioneering work provides an excellent overview and useful bibliography for further inquiries into the subject.

One of the leading scholars of western Buddhism examines the varied development of Buddhist identities and communities in the United States. This work provides a useful, recent overview of the American Buddhist Sangha and includes an important discussion of the differences among imported, exported, and immigrant forms of Buddhism in the West.

The chapters focus on history, global development, practices, and strategic patterns present in Western forms of Buddhism.

Seager’s book is a wellresearched historical survey of the introduction and establishment of different schools of Buddhism in America. Particularly useful is the attention given to Asian immigrant views and practices. He also considers issues of gender, social activism, and relations among various Buddhist groups.
74. Tweed, Thomas A. The American Encounter with Buddhism 1844–1912: Victorian Culture and the Limits of Dissent. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1992. Tweed’s book offers a lucid history of the transplantation of Buddhism to the West. The definitive scholarly study of this early period of Buddhism in America, the work focuses primarily on the encounter of Buddhism with Christianity in the nineteenth century.

This work offers a useful look at Asian American Buddhism, new Buddhists, modes of transmission, and the role of the scholar in Western Buddhism. The bibliography and the references to dissertations and theses on American Buddhism are particularly helpful.
