    • Kaja Silverman has shown how certain texts of Lacans, such as The Four Fundamental Concepts (1964-5), allow for an entry into language and symbolization together with the constitution of the unconscious through primal repression, without reference to the Oedipus and castration complexes. However the dominant Lacanian account is an implicitly normative one. It conflates the two moments of the formation of the unconscious (primal repression) and the Oedipus/castration (secondary repression) as the description of psychosis as the result of foreclosure of the Name of the Father and the refusal of castration. The result can be summarized as no representation without castration with the resulting impasse for the theory of sexuality that Juliet Mitchell and Jacqueline Rose have outlined
