Due to the fact that only 3% of pupils in Northern Ireland are taught in religiously integrated schools, sectarian realities are a structural feature of the education system. EMU was intended to improve community relations by inter-school contact, a formal curriculum that encouraged respect for diversity and a school ethos that reflected toleration, fairness and openness. It was hoped that by the age of 16 pupils not only would have a positive knowledge of other faiths, but been in contact with members of the ‘other’ religious community

Education for Mutual Understanding was made a statutory aspect of the curriculum for schools in Northern Ireland following the Education Reform (NI) Order 1989.
