This lack of literature precedent perhaps explains why Schroeder and co-workers described the key step in their proposed biosynthesis as having a "Diels - Alder-like mechanism" (Scheme 1). The most closely related example of this type of Diels - Alder reaction comes from Bloomquist and co-workers who, in 1956, synthesized 1,2-dimethylenecyclopentane and reported that attempts to distil the product at 97 8C resulted in dimerization, see: A.
