Echostar and DirecTVcontended that the merger was necessary tomake them amore effective competitor to cable. The US Government (both the FCC and the Department of Justice) immediately rejected the merger because the video marketplace was already concentrated and the merger would have made matters worse. The situation might be remedied by opening the market to foreign competition.
