An introductory text, written with heart, that discusses the universal cry for human rights, the role of the United Nations, human rights advocacy around the world, and US human rights policy.
4. Forsythe, David, Human Rights in International Relations (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006). A helpful introductory book that sets the human rights idea within the context of theories and the practice of international relations, and draws on the author's long years of teaching and reflection on human rights.
5. Hanski, Raija and Suksi, Markku, An Introduction to the International Protection of Human Rights, 2nd edn. (Abo, Turku, Finland: Institute for Human Rights, Abo Akademi University, 1999). A useful introductory text focusing on human rights at the United Nations, the specialized agencies, and regional organizations; it also discusses the role of NGOs.
6. Henkin, Louis, The Age of Right (New York: Columbia University Press, 1990). A superbly argued presentation of the history of the human rights idea and of the contemporary challenges of protection.
7. Hunt, Lynn, Inventing Human Rights: A History (New York and London: W. W. Norton & Company, 2007). An intriguing account of the spread of the notion of human dignity in European literature and its contribution to development of the human rights idea.
8. Ishay, Micheline, The History of Human Rights: From Ancient Times to the Globalization Era (Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 2004). An introductory background work on early ethical contributions to human rights, human rights and the Enlightenment, human rights and the industrial age, and during the period since the United Nations was established.
9. Lauren, Paul Gordon, The Evolution of International Human Rights: Visions Seen (Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2003). A helpful historical work, written with feeling, and presenting historical and contemporary visions of human rights. Solid background reading.
10. Mertus, Julie, The United Nations and Human Rights: A Guide for a New Era (London and New York: Routledge, 2005). A helpful introductory text presenting the different facets of the United Nations and its work for human rights. It has useful details and tables.
11. Morsink, Johannes, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Origins, Drafting and Intent (Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1999). Explores the drafting process and the ideas that went into the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
12. Zakaria, Fareed, The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad (New York and London: W. W. Norton & Company, 2003). An intense presentation of the idea of freedom, contemporary challenges, and future prospects.
