Slops are actually the 'monopoly' of tankers: they are the oil residues flowing from the cleaning of crude oil cargo tanks

The criminalization of seafarers - from master mariner to "master criminal"
-
The Spanish authorities demanded that the salvage master sign a letter to confirm that he would not bring the vessel within 120 miles of the Spanish coast. It has been suggested that had the Prestige been towed by salvors SMIT to a place of refuge on 14 November 2002, the pollution would have been restricted to no more than 2,000 tons. The efforts of the master, at the age of 67 with 42 years' experience on tankers, to stabilise successfully the vessel, save the crew and save the vessel during more than 48 hours in a row without sleeping are considered as heroic. On the evening of 15 November, the master was evacuated from the vessel, handcuffed and interviewed at length despite the lack of sleep, then imprisoned at the local police station. The Prestige sank a few days later on 19 November. The master was then transferred to a high-security prison

The influence of regulations on the safety record of the Aframax tankers

study carried out in the context of the Pollution Prevention & Control (POP&C) project, financially supported by the European Commission under the FP6 Sustainable Surface Transport Programme. There is no room in this study to analyse the motivations behind new legislation but before any new legislation a prior methodology is needed to evaluate and distinguish areas in need of improvement and those areas where improvement is marginal and therefore not justified
