Deleuze, Dif ference and Repetition, 138-39: the classical image of thought, Deleuze argues, is based on "good will" whereby "thought is⋯ flled with no more than an image of itself, one in which it recognizes itself the more it recognizes things" (138). Thus, the very idea of representation is based on "good will" and an "upright nature", both of which are presupposed by the idea of a "generalized method" (139). Counterposed to "generalized method" is the fgure of the thinker who exhibits "bad will." Mauvaise volonté has little to do with the intention to hurt others or with any deliberate attempt to obstruct. Rather, the term designates the disposition of someone who fails to grasp what goes without saying for everyone else. Thus, "bad will" offers resistance to any general consensus or agreement about what we all, as thinkers, ought to "know very well." Thanks to Isabelle Stengers for some of these formulations.
