Michael O'Toole, who has made a substantial contribution to bridging the gap between Russian literary theory and Anglo-American criticism, and is one of the few scholars who have the right to demand reciprocity from their Eastern European colleagues, expressed a similar concern about the lack of communication between Eastern and Western critics. 27. O'Toole demonstrates how Lotman's discussion of several crucial issues is impoverished by his disregard of the relevant studies by Kristeva, Halliday and Foucault. It is interesting to observe, however, that Kristeva's knowledge of Lotman's writings is somewhat imperfect. In her otherwise well-informed paper published after Lotman's death, Kristeva mistakes his early paper 'On the Delimitation of Linguistic and Philological Concepts of Structure' for his first book ('On Yury Lotman', PMLA, May 1994, pp.375-6)
