    • The World Almanac and Book of Facts (1999, 864), citing the 1998 World Refugee Survey, states that, as of December 31, 1997, for countries estimated to host at least 50, 000 refugees, there were 616, 000 refugees throughout the Americas and the Caribbean. 491, 000 were in the United States, leaving 125, 000 in other countries of the hemisphere. At most, a quarter of the remaining refugees lived in the Caribbean islands, a number well below the estimate number of protected area refugees from LHNP (estimates that do not count Haitians sequestered in the park). Readers interested in conservation refugees in Africa should see Geisler and Letsoalo (2000); Geisler and de Souza (2001); Chatty and Colchester (2002); and Brockington (2002).
