40. Facing Up to Illegal Immigration. 2004. Films for the Humanities. Originally an ABC news program, this film looks at various concerns about undocumented immigrants, including their impact on jobs and the role of ‘‘porous borders in a time of terrorism.’’
41. Well-Founded Fear. 2000. Epidavros Project. This film examines the asylum-granting process in the United States under the (then) Immigration and Naturalization Service. Guidelines for granting asylum have become even more restrictive since the film was made.
42. In America. 2003. Fox Searchlight Pictures. A modern-day Irish family crosses the Canadian border, headed for New York in an effort to achieve the American dream.
43. The Joy Luck Club. 1993. Hollywood Pictures. Based on the novel by Amy Tan, this film relates the experiences of four Chinese women who emigrated to the United States and their first-generation daughters.
44. Mi Familia. 1995. New Line Cinema. Following a Mexican immigrant from his arrival in Los Angeles and marriage to another immigrant, this film traces challenges and adjustments across three generations.
45. Mississippi Masala. 1992. Columbia TriStar Home Video. The daughter of an Indian immigrant family, which came to the United States via Uganda, falls in love with an African American man.
46. Spanglish. 2004. Columbia Pictures. A Mexican mother enters the United States with her young daughter and accepts a position as a domestic.
47. The Wedding Banquet. 1994. Fox Video. A gay Taiwanese man in New York under pressure to marry plans a fake marriage to a young Chinese woman who needs a green card.
