    • Many debates among architects in the 1990s make reference to the urban problem, in which construction projects advocating commerce and their primary function for consumption supplant the state (see Tella, Un crack en la ciudad;

Both Gerez and Puthod turned up alive, while López is still missing (see the Proyecto Desaparecidos website, www.desaparecidos.org;

    • For the site to succeed, profits must compensate investment, and the surrounding neighborhood must feel the impact through a "network of revenue." The Punta Carretas neighborhood demonstrates this phenomenon, as it transformed into a place for the city's most exclusive patrons (see Alexander, "Can You Build a Downtown Shopping Center?" 2-3).

    • As the esma web page indicates, information from an ex-detainee confirms that the site was already used as a detention center before the military coup (see www.derhuman. jus.gov. ar/espacioparalamemoria).

    • From the outset, residents expected the proposal of a "memory museum", a concept that was later modified to an idea for an "espacio para la memoria y defensa de los derechos humanos" (space for remembering and defending human rights). In a special edition published in 2006, a key book based on conversations from women ex-detainees states that once civilians gained control of the ex-ccd grounds, former detainees would have less interest in the way the grounds were obtained than in having them express the struggle of those who were exterminated (see Actis et al., Ese infierno, 302).

    • In this sense, the matter differs from various proposals for a memory museum, such as the one found in Montevideo at dictator Santos's former cottage. This memory museum follows an approach more traditionally in line with collections of objects corresponding to the moment of the coup, exile, the prisons, and the transition (see González, "Las sombras del edificio", 76).

    • "Godliness" played a fundamental role within the ccd, not only making reference to the commitment that the Catholic church played in Argentina, but also to the fact that once detainees were admitted to the center, they surrendered their potential will to live and die. The artworks produced on the centers, as well as many survivors' testimonies, emphasize the fact that entrance to the grounds implied entering a limbo state. In this state, the detainee was usurped from his or her chance of life and death. This was part of the dehumanizing process, where disappearance (like depriving one of death) is the most final feature. For example, see the game that Marco Bechis plays in the movie Garage Olimpo (also see the text in Filmare la violenza sotterranea) and the detailed study on "godliness", analyzed as the deprivation of another's death in the logic of the detention center, appearing in Pilar Calveiro's work on concentration camps in Argentina (see Calveiro, Poder y desaparición, 53-60).

    • Presently, the La Floresta neighborhood has a high population of immigrants, and cases of Bolivian immigrants living in a state of near detention and slavery there have been reported. The most significant case took place in the former clandestine detention center (Automotores Orletti) that was a key site for disappeared Uruguayan detainees in Argentina, which until recently operated as a site where Bolivian workers were held, working throughout the week as slaves (see Carlos Rodríguez, "Centro clandestino, esta vez de confección", Página/12, 31 March 2007, www.pagina12.com.ar/ diario/elpais/1-82598-2007-03-31.html;
