    • The characteristics of the interview participants were similar to those of the larger Portland-area study population enrolled in Medicaid through the lottery from which they were drawn
    • For example, the interviewees were 54 percent female (versus 53 percent overall for the group gaining insurance through the lottery in Portland); 73 percent white, non-Hispanic (versus 76 percent); and 29 percent ages 50-65 (versus 31 percent). Previous work (see Note 8) shows that the OHP lottery sample was somewhat older and sicker than the general low-income Oregon population and that those who enrolled in OHP after the lottery were slightly older, sicker, and poorer than the lottery list overall. It is also important to compare the Oregon low-income uninsured population to the low-income uninsured US population. Lowincome uninsured Oregonians are roughly similar to low-income uninsured Americans with the exception of race: a significantly higher share of Oregon's population is white and a lower share is black than in the US population overall
