4. Birth counts by Macfarlane and Mugford is one of the best guides and most convenient data sources for obstetric epidemiology. Apair of articles in Br J Obstet Gynaecol [3,4] are a good starting point for evaluating studies of test accuracy, although conventional statistical text books will be better guides to using tests in clinical practice. The Cochrane collaboration and its various guides and databases should be the first port of call for anyone wishing to find out about the effectiveness of a particular treatment.
