This is the largest prospective study to date of IPV on risk of incident HIV infection. The authors followed over 4000 Ugandan women for two years and found 55% increased adjusted odd of HIV infection of women who have experienced IPV. The risk of HIV infection did not seem to differ between types of IPV. The risk of HIV was not mediated by condom use or number of past-year sexual partners.

[Epub ahead of print]. This is the first population-based study of the clinical impact IPV among 339 HIV-infected women. IPV was common (40%) and was associated with increased HIV-related and HIV-unrelated hospitalizations. The patients who experienced IPV had less use of ART and were more frequently lost to follow-up, which may explain the poor outcomes.

This study showed an IPV prevalence of almost one in four and victims of IPV had a higher rate of HIV-related hospitalizations and progression to AIDS after having the opportunity to engage in medical care.
