Note
-
The phrase 'remotely piloted' rather than 'unmanned' underscores that, in most cases, there is a human in the loop. Many drones are capable of self-guidance for short periods of time but, unlike straightforward missiles, still have human oversight while in flight. Although we use the term 'drones' throughout in the interests of clarity, these distinctions should be kept in mind.

These estimates all rely on contestable methods of calculation. But even a dissenting analysis, one which takes a much lower estimate of Reaper costs, comes to the conclusion that the Global Hawk is much more expensive than manned aircraft.
