5. E4 RICHARD ASSMANN (1845-1918) was a German meteorologist and physicist, discoverer (together with LOUIS TEISSERENC DE BORT) of the stratosphere in 1902. From 1905 to 1914 he was director of the Prussian Royal Aeronautical Observatory at Lindenberg. He is perhaps most widely known for the development of the aspiration psychrometer (EMEIS, 2012).
