Clemens, Samuel L. 1870-1909. Autobiographical Writings and Autobiographical Dictations. Beginning in 1870 and continuing sporadically over the next decades, Mark Twain wrote-and occasionally dictated-a number of autobiographical essays, primarily about his family history and his business affairs. These he pigeonholed. Finally, in 1906, he began his autobiography in earnest, dictating to a secretary who typed each day's installment. He hoped to create a uniquely honest form of memoir, conversational and organic, broaching topics as they occurred to him. Although he edited and published parts of the autobiography in the North American Review in twenty-five installments in 1906 and 1907 (collected and republished by Michael J. Kiskis in 1990), he intended the bulk of his memoir-encompassing both the manuscript and the dictated portions-to be published posthumously. The hundreds of typescript pages that resulted from his dictations between 1906 and 1909, organized by date in more than 250 folders, are in the Mark Twain Papers of The Bancroft Library. After Mark Twain's death, selections from the autobiographical writings were published piecemeal in periodicals and in editions by Albert Bigelow Paine in 1924, Bernard DeVoto in 1940, and Charles Neider in 1959.
