For instance, farms must resize their tracts, align rows and space them properly, eliminate terraces, remove rocks and tree stumps, and plant adequate varieties of cane whose roots resist the weight of the machine and sprout even when covered by dead leaves. Mills must adapt their practices as well because cane harvested by machines contains a higher proportion of organic matter and deteriorates faster than the alternative. As summarized by the director of agricultural operations of a large mill, "If you are not careful and do not pay attention to all the details, you lose a lot of sugar content."
