This study of a small community sample of 496 adolescent girls followed for over 8 years reports a lifetime prevalence of any DSM-5 eating disorder of 13.1% by age 20. Girls with eating disorders reported greater functional impairment, distress, suicidality, mental health treatment, and unhealthy BMI, implying that the DSM-5 criteria capture clinically significant psychopathology.

This study compares the impact of applying the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and the broad categories for the diagnosis of eating disorders (BCD-ED) proposed by Walsh and Sysko on the prevalence of EDNOS, in a combined sample of female high school students (n2028) and university students (n1020). The application of the DSM-5 criteria reduced the proportion of EDNOS diagnoses from 73 to 44%.

This is a longitudinal study of 246 treatment-seeking female patients, who were interviewed every 6 months for a median of 9.5 years to obtain weekly ratings of eating disorder symptoms, comorbidity, treatment participation, and psychosocial functioning. For anorexia nervosa, the risk of death was highest within the first 10 years of follow-up, and SMR varied by the duration of illness. Multivariate predictors of mortality included alcohol abuse, low BMI, and poor social adjustment.

Behav Res Ther 2012; 50:775-785. This study assessed the long-term efficacy of CBT and BWL, with a follow-up duration of 6 years after the end of treatment. After a strong improvement during active treatment, outcomes worsened during follow-up, yet remained improved at 6-year follow-up. Long-term effects between CBT and BWL were comparable.
