Early indicators of prognosis in fulminant hepatic failure
-
This seminal article details a scheme to accurately determine prognosis using commonly available variables to rapidly identify which patients will likely need transplantation or not. The scheme has been repeatedly tested by other systems, and has still stood the test of time.

Prospective, randomised, multicenter, controlled trial of a bioartificial liver in treating acute liver failure
-
A report of the largest clinical trial of cell-based, liver support therapy in the treatment of patients with acute liver failure. It shows that such devices may play a role in the management of patients with acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure, and acute liver failure caused by hepatitis A and B. It also highlights the problems with performing studies with liver support devices.
