1. For those not familiar with these web services: discussion forums are like electronic bulletin boards, where users can post and reply to messages related to a particular topic or range of topics. Internet messaging is a means of sending text messages over the Internet instantly and conversing with text. Webmail is a web service connecting a website to an email server, so that users can read and send email without a separate email program or application. Chat is similar to Internet messaging but allows for multiple users in addition to one-on-one communication. File galleries are Internet sites containing files for download, and to which users can upload files of various kinds. Image galleries are a special kind of file gallery dedicated to uploading and downloading digital images. Blogs, an elision of "web logs," are electronic journals or diaries that are open to some community or the public.

4. A complete discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of synchronous delivery of philosophy courses via distance learning is well beyond the scope of this article. Suffice to say that the philosophy courses other than logic that I teach are strongly grounded in class discussion and group collaboration. These modes of instruction are quite difficult if not entirely unfeasible given the technology in use in our distance learning labs.

The page naming convention in a wiki is to capitalize the first letters of at least two words and then remove spaces to create a WikiWord (like that one); the software recognizes such formatting as designating page names and makes them into web links to the named pages: this convention is more cumbersome to describe than to use. Hence the term 'WikiNotes' for the pages in my seminar's site.

7. Here is the specific notice I have employed on my syllabi: FERPA Statement This course may require contribution to the discussion forum, wiki, and other collaborative projects. Collaborative projects by their very nature expose student work products to other students and possibly members of the public, although graded work and student grades will never be disclosed. Nonetheless, the nature of collaborative work makes it impossible to protect all of students' privacy rights under applicable provisions of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Students remaining in the class thus agree to waive their FERPA rights for any collaborative work for this course.
