1. The augmented Environments Lab, directed by Blair MacIntyre, is a research group in the GVU Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The group has been working in the area of augmented reality since 1998, investigating how interactive computing environments can be used to directly augment the information and enhance the experience of users. One main current research initiative is the development of the argon browser and related technologies and their application for the cultural heritage and other experiences discussed in this article. For descriptions of all the aEL projects, see the website (http://ael.gatech.edu/lab). Researchers and students who have contributed to argon development and the experiences mentioned here include: Maribeth Gandy, Hafez Rouzati, Brian Davidson, Gheric Speiginer, Isaac Kulka, Evan Barba, Jeff Wilson, and alex Hill. Jomis Kakozhayil and Jing Li worked with us on the 3-D models and the design of the Lights of St Etienne project. Rebecca Rouse, nachiketas Ramanujanr Simone Frassanito, and Sanika Mokashi helped specifically with panorama projects. Rebecca Rouse is also conducting historical research into the panorama, which contributed to the work we present here.
