    • Figure 3 shows "metropolitan areas" for each decade. These are constructed at the county level and are consistent throughout. While metropolitan areas as we know them today did not exist in the early part of the twentieth century, full metropolitan area de1/2nitions for 2010 are used for the sake of making consistent comparisons. See the earlier methodology section for a more detailed discussion.
