Pickup coil signals detected at the modulation frequency are proportional to ac magnetic susceptibilities for Bâ̂¥c. In the case of Bâ̂¥ab, the coil axis is perpendicular to B since the coil and sample are rotated together with the c axis kept parallel to the coil axis. If the alignment of the sample and coil axis is perfect, no signal will be detected. However, there is small misalignment, which produces small signal proportional to the component of ac magnetization along the coil axis for Bâ̂¥ab.

This is related to the imbalance of the pickup coil. The pickup coil is composed of coaxially wound inner and outer coils. The two coils are balanced without a sample at θ= 0 so that the emf's induced in the two coils cancel each other out. The balance, however, degrades as θ increases.
