In 2007 about 30 percent of adults were estimated to hold supplemental policies that could be used for private or semiprivate inpatient rooms. The higher estimate of almost 90 percent is based on a different definition of supplemental insurance, including policies that cover services not included in the basic health plan (such as dental care) and-importantly-cash benefits if a person has to miss work (see Note 7)

Switzerland's original risk equalization formula used only sex and age groups; in 2012 hospitalization lasting more than three days in the previous year was added as a third risk-equalization factor. Insurers with more covered lives in the lowerrisk groups (young males) pay money to the risk-equalization pool, and insurers with more covered lives in the higher-risk groups (adults over age 55 and adults with hospitalizations) receive funds from the pool. Equalization is done at the cantonal level and involves a simple redistribution of monies; no other funds are involved
