    • When transition dipole moments of emitting molecules are oriented in the horizontal direction, the outcoupling efficiency of the OLED becomes higher than that with randomly oriented transition dipole moments. This is because vertically oriented transition dipole moments are excluded from the emitting layer. Because the vertically oriented transition dipole moments emit light mainly in the horizontal direction, the light emitted from them cannot be extracted from the device due to the total reflection. If it is ideally assumed that transition dipole moments of all emitting molecules are oriented completely in the horizontal direction, the increasing rate compared to random orientation is around 1.5. Thus, the outcoupling efficiency of OLEDs can be enhanced by designing emitting molecules so that their transition dipole moments are horizontally oriented well in the film
