    • The governor-general is the vice-regal representative of PNG's official head of state, the British monarch. Always chosen from the ranks of prominent PNG politicians, the governor-general is nominated by the PNG Parliament and then receives the monarch's formal appointment to a six-year term. If the office is vacant, the speaker of Parliament becomes acting governor-general.
