F. Lafolet, J. Chauvin, M. Collomb, A. Deronzier, H. Laguitton-Pasquier, J. C. Lepretre, J. C. Vial, B. Brasme, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2003, 5, 2520-2527. Diazonium salts are often used as sacrificial electron acceptors in light-driven reactions because of their low reduction potentials (0.5 V vs. NHE) and lack of absorption in the visible region. They quench the excited state of ruthenium compounds by electron transfer. The reaction is stoichiometric with no back reaction from the reduced species to the ruthenium sensitiser. Upon reduction, diazonium salts undergo carbon-nitrogen cleavage, forming nitrogen and an aryl radical. The resulting radical abstracts a hydrogen from a solvent molecule, which results in the overall replacement of the hydrogen atom by the diazonium group.
