    • The term inverse trans influence has been used loosely (in some cases to imply the preference in uranium compounds for metal-ligand multiple bonds to be coordinated in a trans relationship) and to describe a variety of phenomena. The paper focuses on this strict definition in order to understand phenomena unique to the actinides. The ITI described for cobaloxines is distinct from the ITI of the actinides. It describes "the observation that in cobaloximes both axial distances Co-X and Co-L lengthen when the electron-donating ability of X increase has been called inverse trans influence, in contrast with the regular trans influence, which occurs when the Co-X bond shortens and the Co-L bond lengthens."
