Birth weight postnatal weight change and risk for high blood pressure among chinese children
-
In this population-based study, the authors investigated the association of birth weight and postnatal weight gain with elevated BP, defined as BP > 90th percentile for age and gender, among 15,600 Chinese children aged 3-6 years. Greater birth weight or postnatal weight gain was associated with increased risk of elevated childhood BP, suggesting that intrauterine growth and postnatal weight gain may have implications for childhood health

Big mother or small baby: Which predicts hypertension?
-
In this Canadian study, no correlation was observed between birth weight or gestational age and BP Z-score in 3,024 children aged 2-18 years, even when corrected for BMI Z-score at follow-up. The results of the study suggest that high BMI, overweight mother, and a high birth weight may be more important risk factors for elevated BP during childhood than low birth weight or gestational age

Birth weight is inversely associated with blood pressure and serum aldosterone and cortisol levels in children
-
This cross-sectional Chilean study, carried out in children born at gestational age > 32 weeks, demonstrates an inverse association between birth weight and BP and serum aldosterone and cortisol levels. This association is independent of BMI and Tanner stage, suggesting fetal programming of the hypothalamic-ituitary-adrenal axis

Stereological assessment of renal development in a baboon model of preterm birth
-
Through a series of stereological studies, conducted using a clinically relevant baboon model, this report illustrates that nephrogenesis continues following preterm birth; however, the renal development may be impaired in light of evidence for morphological glomerular abnormalities in the outer cortex of some, but not all, preterm kidneys. Importantly, antenatal glucocorticoid exposure prior to preterm birth was associated with accelerated renal maturity, which may impart a benefit on renal function in the early postnatal period
