This study, conducted as a secondary analysis of prospectively collected data from a multicenter study, found baseline pain severity as a prognostic factor for pain control. Patients with moderate to severe pain took a longer time to achieve stable pain control. Other predictors include age and neuropathic pain.

This large retrospective study of cancer patients in the outpatient settings found high pain intensity scores to be a predictor of hospital admission within 30 days.
