The fieldwork is part of a broader qualitative research project on the disjuncture between the official claims made for UN-sponsored transitional justice in East Timor and community discontent. It included in-depth semi-structured interviews with approximately 100 survivors, community leaders and other key actors. Interviews were carried out in strict conformity with the requirements of the University of Melbourne's human ethics committee. Approval for the project was granted on 16 February. For the full project.
