    • The practice of footwashing in early Pentecostal circles was remarkably widespread. For the practice of footwashing at Azusa Street see D.T. Irvin, "'Drawing All Together in One Bond of Love': The Ecumenical Vision of William J. Seymour and the Azusa Street Revival," Journal of Pentecostal Theology 6 (April 1995): 35 esp. n. 23. On the other end of the continent the emerging Church of God practiced footwashing from the beginning. For Richard Spurling, one of the founders of the Christian Union, the practice of footwashing predates his involvement with the Christian Union as footwashing was regularly practiced at the Holly Springs Baptist Church where he was a member. In addition, A.J. Tomlinson was practicing footwashing as early as 25 March 1901. See his diary entry for this detail. Still another stream of the tradition is represented by C.H. Mason who appears to have practiced footwashing from early on as well. I am indebted to David Roebuck for the information on Spurling and to Dale Irvin for the information on Mason.
