Cornea 2012; 31:101-105. SALK involves a 130 mm superficial keratectomy followed by the placement of an appropriately sized donor graft. It has been shown to be effective for cases with postkeratoplasty anterior corneal opacities.

[Epub ahead of print] This interventional case series evaluated outcomes of big bubble DALK in cases with postkeratitis and posttraumatic corneal scars. DALK was found to be a well tolerated and viable option in such cases.

Am J Ophthalmol 2011; 151:760e1-767e1.This study is one of the largest series of cases of keratoconus that underwent DALK. Big bubble was successfully achieved in 82.4% of eyes. Best spectaclecorrected visual acuity was 20/40 or more about 80% of eyes. Long-term endothelial cell loss was moderate and lower than penetrating keratoplasty grafts.

Ophthalmology 2011; 118:209-218. DALK was found to be equivalent to penetrating keratoplasty for the outcome measure of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity. Postoperative data indicated that DALK was superior to penetrating keratoplasty for preservation of endothelial cell density.

This prospective, comparative and nonrandomized study compared the insertion of donor lenticule using EndoGlide and the Busin glide. Six-month follow-up data howed that the EndoGlide results in significantly less endothelial cell loss than Busin glide donor insertion during DSE K.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 2012; 53:521-524. The authors compared three microkeratome-assisted techniques for the preparation of ultrathin grafts for DSAEK. Although all methods proved equally efficient, stromal hydration was found to induce tissue structural changes.

Cornea 2011; 30:1382-1386. The authors evaluated patients' perspectives and outcomes of two different endothelial keratoplasty techniques, DSAEK and DMEK. The majority of the patients preferred the DMEK mainly because of faster visual recovery and better final visual acuity.

Corneal endothelial rejection rates were compared in cases undergoing DMEK, DSEK and penetrating keratoplasty. Patients undergoing DMEK had a significantly reduced risk of experiencing a rejection episode within 2 years after surgery compared with other surgeries using the same corticosteroid regimen.

Ophthalmology 2011; 118:2368-2373. Outcomes of DMEK were studies in 136 eyes with corneal endothelial dysfunction. These cases were found to achieve better visual acuity results in the first year after surgery than typically reported for DSAEK.

This study evaluated the use of a single donor cornea for two recipients by combining DALK and DMEK surgeries on the same day. Split use of donor corneal tissue for combined DALK and DMEK procedures in two recipients on the same surgery day was found to be a potential approach to reduce donor shortage and cost in corneal transplantation surgery.

This study evaluated split cornea transplantation by combining DALK and DMEK. Split use of donor corneal tissue in two recipients within 3 subsequent days was found to be safe and feasible.

The authors evaluated the use of one donor cornea for two recipients for anterior lamellar and posterior lamellar keratoplasties. The study demonstrated that one donor corneal tissue can be successfully used for two patients with appropriate case selection.
