1. We prefer the term civil society organisation (CSO) which emphasises what these organisations stand for rather than what they are not (non-governmental organisations, NGOs). According to Salamon and Anheier, CSOs should represent non-profit group interests, be anchored in values, promote solidarity and volunteerism, and enjoy some personal and financial autonomy from the state and private sector.
