Theoretical approaches which have been applied to this problem include the BEB model of Kim and Rudd and the Deutsch-Märk formalism, e.g., Y.-K. Kim and M.E. Rudd, Phys. Rev. A 50, 3954 (1994);

Note that the argon data for energies greater than 40 eV are based on our earlier study 10 but that they reflect a recent recalibration of the apparatus and differ slightly from those given in that paper

It might be expected that comparison of the ratios of the partial cross sections would be less equivocal than comparisons of their absolute values and that the ratios would be measured very accurately. Indeed, the uncertainties ascribed to the reported cross-section ratios are often as low as ±2%. However, the agreement between these ratios is as poor as that for the partial cross sections themselves, perhaps worse when their respective error bars are considered. The problem of irreproducible cross-section ratios has already been studied in some detail by F. Egger and T.D. Märk, Z. Naturforsch. A 33A, 1111 (1978);
