    • Magnetic properties of the gold clusters protected by glutathione have been studied by X-ray MCD (XMCD) measurements (ref 15c), giving very different information from that obtained by MCD in the UV-vis region presented here. Note that XMCD involves excitation of magnetic core electrons to empty or partly filled valence orbitals in the X-ray region, so a characteristic feature of XMCD is that it provides an element-specific spectrum that is a measure of orbital and spin angular momentum and the related magnetic properties.
